Getting a cheap airfare often comes down to luck but is there anything you can do to increase your chances of snagging a bargain? Here are a few tips to help you save money the next time you fly:

• Fly mid week (Tuesday or Wednesday) or very early or late at night - the emptier a plane, the cheaper the seats - so go for days & times that will be less popular;
• Book as far in advance as possible, airlines will release their fares at a low price to get the seats filled - as the flight fills up, the prices will go up;
• If travelling to Europe, look for Earlybird Specials often released in October or November for travel the following year, you can save hundreds of dollars;

• When a new airline starts flying to Australia, or starts flying a new route, look for pre-launch and launch specials;
• Avoid airline peak seasons if you can, if you travel during popular holiday times, like Christmas, it will be more expensive;
